5 Sentence Fiction: Enrapture

This week’s FSF from Lillie McFerrin is Enrapture.

The pain was blinding, making her feel as though her body was being split in two. She tried to remember what they’d been taught in class, but when the pain peaked, it consumed her and she could recall nothing.

The doctor kept saying she was doing well, things were progressing the way they should, but she didn’t think so; there was no way it should hurt this bad for this long.

She bared down one final time as hard as she could, and as she concentrated on pushing, the noises of the room merged into a quiet buzz. As the baby’s cry shattered into existence, she fell back, pure joy and exhaustion spreading through her as the world began to fade.
